NSW Travellers Series Draft 2 Calendar 2011-12

Hi F18 sailors

We are currently working on the draft calendar for the NSW travellers series. This is what we have come up with so far. At the presentation dinner a copy of the draft was supplied for suggestions and comments.  Everybody seemed happy but a few sailors have contented that they prefer 2 day events rather than travel to a one day event. I have passed this message onto some of the clubs. Are there any other comments? At present we are contacting clubs and confirming dates. Please note that some of the dates have changed from the original draft.

Regards
Leanne Gould

F18 Nationals Magnetic Island Race Week

Attention F18 Sailors,

It is only a matter of weeks now until the F18 Nationals will be held as part of "Sunferries Magnetic Island Race Week".
Remember this event is the official qualifying event for the F18 Worlds next July in Long Beach USA.

It is important that you all register for the event via the regatta website ASAP
www.magneticislandraceweek.com.au
The website has all the info you will need to plan your trip.

The regatta organisers are continuing to try and attract more sponsorship for the event and to help with this we need to register ASAP.

There are barges that run to the island many times a day and within the next couple of weeks we will announce details on how to book your barge journey.

There is still lots of quality accommodation still available to suit all budgets.

The F18 fleet will have their own race course separate to the yachts to allow an uninterrupted race course along with a professional PRO.
We will also have our own very large rigging area which will be securely fenced and well lit at night.

Registration will take place on Thursday and a welcome function is planned for
Thursday night.
Friday will see a course set for the F18 for the purpose of practice / training in the race area, and allow the F18 fleet to view the yacht racing on that day.
Official racing will begin on the Saturday.
Each afternoon there will be a Happy Hour on the deck at "Peppers" and this will be a great opportunity for us to explain to the yachties why we sail these great boats!

Also if you know of anyone who would like to volunteer for the event, either on a chase boat or on shore, please let me know via email.

Get your boat ready, enter via the website and come and enjoy one of the most beautiful places in the country.

We look forward to welcoming you to NQ!

Townsville Sailing Club

Townsville Sailing Club

Townsville Sailing Club is gearing up for its biggest event since hosting the 505 World Titles in 1996.
The annual Sprints Regatta, held over the June long weekend, will this year include the Inaugural Round Magnetic Island Marathon, the QLD Tasar State Titles and is also a round of the Nacra NQ Super Series.

Sprint races will be held on Saturday 11
th and Sunday 12th June and are open to all off the beach dinghies, multi-hulls and yachts. One design and mixed fleets can expect to compete in many races with close racing over short courses.

The Inaugural Around Magnetic Island Race will be held on Monday 13
th June. Any off the beach boat with a VYC yardstick 108 or under and Safety Cat 5 yachts are invited to enter this 24NM one lap race of the island.
TSC is expecting a strong fleet of dinghies and catamarans including F18’s to compete and is hoping the race will rival the Round Dunk Island race held at Mission Beach annually.

It has recently been announced that the Formula 18 class will be holding its National Titles later this year in conjunction with the Magnetic Island Race Week. The NQ Sprints will serve as great practice for the fleet as well as an opportunity for all sailors to enjoy the beautiful waters and conditions of Townsville.

The rivalry between NQ sailors Mick Guinea and Adam Beattie who finished 5
th and 6th at last years Nacra World Titles respectively is set to continue at the regatta.

Local sailor Aaron Linton who has finished 2
nd at the last two Tasar Nationals, is expected to have a strong showing in his home waters.

The Notice Of Race is posted on the club’s website at
www.tsvsailingclub.com

Are you looking for a mid-winter break from the southern chill? How do 28
oC days and 16oC nights with 22oC water temperature appeal to you this June?

NSW Traveller's Series Update

Hi all
Event 2. The second event of the Traveller's series was hosted by Kurnell Cat Club on the 12th September. We sailed two races back to back with a windward return course. The sun shone and a steady 15kt nor'easter kept a smile on everyone's faces. We were happy to welcome two new boats to the fleet. Peter Lane and crew Gary were sailing on a brand new C2 and John Flewin with crew John Flewin sailed on a Capricorn. The event was won by Trevor Lowder with Richard Brewin as crew on Trev's Capricorn F,n Crazy(1,1). Equal 2nd was Greg and Kez (3,2) and Kyle and Grant (2,3). Paul and Pete were 4th sailing on the black boat (4,4) and Stuart and I were 5th (5,5). The two new blokes had a few problems in the first race and both came equal 6th with a DNF and DNS. The full results with the times are attached.

Coming Up
October 2-4 Forster Wildcat Regatta The warm weather is upon us so lets all get into our bikinis and boardies and head up the coast for the long weekend. What can I say,.. Rhode island, Cowes, Lake Garda, Forster.. the big names on the international circuit. Everybody who is anybody will be there. Greg Goodall is reported to be flying back from Europe for this big event and will be sailing on the new C2. Laura Baldwin and Chris Caldercoat will be flying in from San Francisco and they will be sailing there new boat. The NSW locals will be there in force and a few banana benders and threatening come south across the border. We are expecting over ten F18s. For the uninitiated Forster is a legendary three day catamaran event usually drawing a fleet of between 50 and 100 boats. It has been running for over 30 years and is a perfect blend of competition, party and camping. National park camping is available from Friday to Monday and the club run a canteen and bar over the weekend. For the grand final of the footie they rig a wide screen TV and everybody joins the party. The event is popular with families and sailors of all ages.

Peter Lane and Terry aren't coming. I don't know about John Flewin and Greg and Kez.

October 23-24 Speers point Regatta Seven F18s now race from Speers Point so we have a ready made fleet before the visitors arrive. Camping is available for this regatta and F18 sailors have offered billeting to anyone needing a place to stay. Just let me know and we can sort something out. NSW F18 News

Hi All
Brass Monkeys Regatta We all had a great time at the Brass Monkeys Regatta over a week ago. 5-10kts and sunshine were the perfect tonic for the winter blues and ten F18s turned up to sail in the weekend regatta at the Sydney Flying Squadron. It was a great family event and the girls and the kids enjoyed the spectator ferry and the live music.

Results Steve and Richard Brewin won the regatta in the new C2 with a score of 1,1,1,1. In second place was Greg and Kez (3,2,2,3) and James and Pete 3rd (2,3,5,2). The other placing were; 4th Kyle and Grant (8,4,3,6), 5th Leanne and Stuart (5,7,4,7), 6th Morgans (7,6,7,5) 7th Ian Simpson and Neil (9,10,6,4) 8th Brett White and Lachie (4,5,11,11), 9th Henk and Spike (6,8,8,11) and 10th Glen and James (10,9,11,11).

Presentation dinner On Saturday night our group of fifty took over the club restaurant for our presentation dinner for last season. Greg Goodall from Australian High Performance Catamarans generously donated the major prize of a new spinnaker that was won by the Nissens. The family were over the moon. Thank you Greg! James and Clo Ogilvie from Magic Marine donated sailing gear to the value of $1500 for the other prizes. As well as donating the prizes the Ogilvies helped organize this event and the travellers series and Clo took many great photographs which can be seen on the new website James and Kyle have set up. James has made a major contribution of his time and skills to build the F18 fleet in NSW and we all appreciate his outstanding commitment to the class. The evening was a great kick off to the season.

Next The second event of the travellers series is next Sunday 12 September at Kurnell Catamaran Club. Two races back to back with a briefing at 12 noon and 1.00pm start. We tried to organize a training weekend but wasn't practical this early in the season so we will participate in Kurnells first event for the sailing season.

Coming Up Get your camping gear ready for the Wildcat regatta at Forster over the October long weekend (2nd-4th Oct). We should have a big turn out for this event.

See you on the water

Hi All

The wind blew and we all had a rip roaring, beer drinking, boat breaking good time at the Kembla Klassic last weekend. Six F18s attended and five F18s went home with broken stuff. All part of the preparation for the nationals in Geelong where, reportedly the wind blows fresh to frightening everyday. It was close racing between Brewin and Ogilvie with Richard just beating James. Ian Simpson and his new crew came third which was a good effort for the young bloke who had only sailed on the wire once before the regatta, All the results are on the website
www.pksc.com.au

Steve Brewins A class came off second best in a collision with a 5.8. The bow of the A was completely torn off. Despite the carnage we all had a great time. It was quite an Australian cultural celebration with the heat, camping, barbeque and the essential beer drinking competition. Trevor Lowder enthusiastically led the rest of the boys astray (not that they needed much encouragement) in competing in beer sculling competitions against the monohull sailors. The boys yet again proved the well known fact that cat sailors can drink beer faster than the mono sailors.

Gossip; Stuart bought a Nacra infusion and we picked it up last Thursday. Stu was working last weekend so I took it down to Port Kembla to race with Kyle doing me a favour and crewing. James took a day off work last Friday to help me set the boat up. Without the help of James and Kyle I couldn't have got the boat on the water to race. A big thankyou to the boys. Now we have to sell the Tiger. Any enquires ring Stuart on 0421878823

The next race is at Speers Point next Saturday 12th December. They will be doing the one long race starting at 2.00pm with windward returns and triangles. Stuart and I can't make it and neither can James but Kyle will be racing. Are any other Sydney boats making the trek to Lake Macquarie? This will be the last race before the Nationals. On Monday I will be away on holidays for a few weeks with the family so Merry Christmas to all and see you at the nationals

Kyle and Sam Take a Swim

Sorry Guys

Palm Beach Regatta

Hi All

On the weekend we had a bobby dazzler of a breeze at Palm Beach for the sixth event of the travellers series. After a season on light conditions at last we had NE 15 knots on Saturday and 15/20 from the south on Sunday. Katie and Clo had a break from their Olympic training and joined their husbands on board. The girls were actually talking about sailing together one regatta to see how they measured up against Grantly and James. This seemed to make the boys a tad nervous.

The Palm Beach regatta was called "Beware the Bullets" which was a warning not entirely heeded. The fresh breeze brought it's share of thrills and spills. In a training session last Friday Macca gave Stuart a practical demonstration of how it is much easier to capsize a Tiger than a Nacra. This obviously inspired James who does not like to be out done. On Saturday he drove his boat down the mine with speed and precision demonstrating that in fact a Nacra can go in just as effectively. Kyle and Sam saw everybody else having fun swimming in the water and didn't want to miss out. Greg and Kez on the Capricorn were ripping sails on Saturday but they disappeared at one stage on Sunday. I don't know if they were in swimming too or just back at the beach chatting up the girls. Katie and I didn't bother with that nonsense we preferred to keep our hair dry.

James and Clo won the regatta but the places have not yet been confirmed because of a query with the scoring system. The results and some pictures are on the website
www.pbsc.org.au

Next is the Kembla Klassic Regatta on the 28th and 29 November. For details go to the website
www.pksc.com.au  There will be four races over the weekend. The registration is 8.00am - 10.00am and the briefing is 9.30am. The first race starts at 11.00am on Saturday and 10.00am Sunday. Camping at the club. Lunches both days, barbeque Saturday night and breakfast Saturday morning. At this stage the boats definitely going are; Greg and Kez, Richard Brewin, James and Pete, Kyle and I, the Nissens and the Morgans. Stuart is working and Grantly and Katie are sailing big boats that weekend so two boats won't be there. Trevor Lowder and Ian Simpson should both be there if they can organise crew. Greg Goodall will probably be coming up from Melbourne with the new breed of Capricorn. I haven't heard from Brett White. That makes 6 definite boats, and an extra 4 maybes.

F18 States 2009

Hi All

We all had an awesome weekend at Kurnell. Thankyou to the organisers and volunteers who ran the racing, feed and looked after us. The results are attached and a couple of photos below. We had seven races over the weekend and twelve starts if you count all the general recalls. There seemed to be much improvement in the middle and back of the fleet and it was great practise for the nationals. Grantly and Macca won the event but the boys were given a run for their money by the Brewins. Unfortunately Richard hasn't totally recovered from the shoulder surgery and isn't in top form but hopefully he will be fighting fit by the January.

Gossip; Patrice had a beer with the fleet on Saturday night. He now lives in Thailand but is often in town on business and is keen to crew some time if anyone is short. Andrew has had a change of circumstances and has given up sailing at the moment. We will all miss him (especially the homemade rum) and hope to keep in touch.

Next weekend 14th and 15th Nov is the Bullets Regatta at Palm beach. The forecast at this stage is for sunshine and afternoon Nor'easters. NE+ Palmy = perfection! Briefing at 10.30am Saturday 14th and racing not earlier than 12 noon. For billet accommodation ring Rod Waterhouse 0416262705 or you can stay at my place but please ring 94493883 or email ASAP. Warning; if you want to stay please contact me early because you will be out of luck if you leave it until Friday or Saturday afternoon. At this stage we have 5 boats coming 1 James and Pete, 2 Kyle, 3 Stu and I, 4 Grantly and 5 Greg and Kez. The Brewins, Lowders and Ian Simpson can't get a leave pass but we don't know about the Whites and Morgans. Are you blokes coming?

Upcoming events;
14th-15th Nov Palm Beach
28th-29th Nov Kembla Klassic (camping available)
12th Dec Speers Point Club racing
23-24-25th Jan Nationals Geelong ( I have found a camp ground 10 minutes from the club that has 3 overpriced cabins that sleep 6. Let me know if you want the details)
